Parking

We don’t have any private parking at St Valery unfortunately.  On street parking is available throughout the village and is free of charge and mainly unrestricted.  A very small section of about 5 spaces on the high street (near Scott’s of Alnmouth delicatessen) is time limited to 2 hours during the day, but everywhere else is restriction free.

If you don’t find parking space immediately, or after a couple of times round the village, you might find it easier to stop opposite on the double yellow lines to unload and get checked in before parking the car.

Alnmouth does get busy, particularly in the late afternoon as people return to their homes, holiday lets and hotels etc, but you’ll find spaces do come up pretty frequently so don’t worry too much as you will always get parked, albeit maybe a few minutes’ walk away.  There is also a larger car park down by the beach which costs £3.50 per day which some of you may find simpler to make use of rather than trying to get parked on the road.  You can also buy a weekly pass for the beach car park for around £10 – monies raised from the car parking fees are used to fund the upkeep of the common and dunes (around 90 acres in total) as well as supporting a wide range of local charities.

Check in and check out

Check in at St Valery is between 4pm and 6pm.  Because we’re a small B&B rather than an hotel, we don’t have a manned check-in desk or reception and so whilst it may be possible to arrive later than this, please just check with us before making a booking – it may be that there is something arranged on that date which would prevent a later check in for example.  Checking in later than 9pm is unfortunately not possible.

You’re more than welcome to arrive earlier, we can’t guarantee your room will be ready, but you can leave your bags and we can let you know just as soon as your room is ready.

If you arrive early and there’s no answer at the door, please feel free to call or message 07920 238345 and let us know you’re here – we’re most likely doing other jobs but we’ll not be far.

Check out is ideally by 11’ish.  If you’re planning on staying locally on the day of departure or waiting for a late train, you’re very welcome to leave bags with us, and to make use of the communal areas until it’s time to leave.

Changes and cancellations

For any cancellations up to 30 days prior to the start of your stay there will be no further charge other than the 50% non-refundable deposit paid when you made the booking.

For cancellations, changes or curtailments within 30 days of the start of your stay, the full cost of the entire reservation will be due and we reserve the right to charge the card you used when making the booking accordingly.  Whilst we will do our utmost to accommodate date changes, depending on the circumstances and notice given, date changes may be classed as cancellations or no shows.

You can manage your booking including paying the balance or making changes/cancellations online at: Manage my booking.

We’re sure you can understand that as a small B&B with only 3 rooms, any cancellations can represent a significant loss of revenue for us and so please do give as much notice as possible if you do need to cancel to allow us time to hopefully rebook the room.

We strongly advise you have appropriate travel insurance in place to cover unexpected events such as illnesses or travel distruption.  If you dont have a suitable policy, we offer this through our partner Xcover which can be purchased at the time of making your reservation for an additional premium (typically less than 10%).  For full terms and conditions, please visit our partners website at: https://www.xcover.com/en/pds/booking-refund-protection-travel

Trains, taxis & buses

We’re just 3.5hrs from London King’s Cross by train, and under an hour from Edinburgh on the East Coast Line.  It is recommended you pre-book taxis if you’re arriving by train as it’s a small station and most of the taxis you might see on arriving will be booked.  We recommend using Knights for train station pick ups as they are based in the village and don’t charge additional to come over from Alnwick – that said, you should still expect to pay about £7 for the very short 1 mile journey .  Alternatively it’ll take about 15-20 minutes to walk into the centre of Alnmouth from the train station .

A few numbers of local firms are Knights Taxis – 07760 751667; AA Taxis – 01665 606060; Gary’s Taxis – 07544 599030; Hadston Taxis – 01670 760698.

The village is served by the X18 bus operated by Arriva travelling towards Newcastle to the south and Berwick to the North.  There is also the 418 service operated by Travelsure once per day covering Alnwick to Belford (including Alnmouth) via the coast.  Whilst it might take longer than by car, you can reach most of the coastal villages such as Craster, Beadnell and Bamburgh by bus.

For up to date timetables, visit the Arriva or the Travelsure websites.

Gift vouchers

Why not treat someone to a stay at St Valery that they can redeem for whatever dates are suitable for them?  Our gift vouchers are available in a variety of monetary values, are valid for 2 years and can be purchased on our website here.

Accessible rooms

We have one room (St Benedict) located on the ground floor and is therefore the most suitable for anyone with mobility issues.

St Aidan and St Cuthbert are on the first floor up one flight of stairs whilst St Bede is on the second floor and the least suitable for guests with mobility issues.

Breakfast

Breakfast at St Valery is a relaxed affair and is served between 8.45am and 10am.

We don’t like pre-ordering when we go away, so we don’t see why we should ask you to do so, but this does mean that dishes don’t appear immediately.  If you’re in a rush and don’t really want to wait, then let us know the day before what you’d like preparing and it’ll save you a bit of time.

For those needing to be up and away early, we’re sometimes asked if it’s possible to have breakfast earlier than the normal 8.45am start.  Please understand that a certain amount of noise is unavoidable during the preparation and serving of breakfast and so for the benefit of all our guests staying who may not want to be woken too early whilst on holiday, this is not something we can do.  Should all guests staying want an early breakfast, such as with a group booking, we’re happy to provide breakfast at any time to suit.

Restaurants

For a small village, Alnmouth is fortunate to have a good selection of places to eat and so hopefully you’ll find something to tickle your taste buds.  Many of the restaurants adjust their opening times according to the time of year and day of the week and we’re very happy to steer you in the right direction with honest recommendations so please do ask.  Alnmouth is very small and so all restaurants are within a minutes’ walk away.  Bookings are strongly recommended.

The Whittling House is located 2 doors away from St Valery offering locally sourced Northumbrian produce and seafood in a relaxed and stylish environment. If the weather’s inclement, then there’s an intimate bar to one side when you can enjoy or a coffee or something stronger.

Bistro 23 is a very popular local restaurant just a few doors away and during May to September/October will be open Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday and only one or two evenings a week in low season.

The Hope & Anchor over the road from St Valery, serves wood fired pizzas, tasty Italian dishes as well as a great fish & chips and is open Tuesday to Saturday and for Sunday lunch.  They also offer some of their dishes for takeaway which can also be ordered online.

The Red Lion is a traditional 18th Century coaching inn with cosy fires in the winter and great beer garden in the summer with views over the estuary. Serving typical pub food during low season the menu switches from around May and only offers wood fired pizzas – but they are really good. Food isn’t served every day so it’s always worth checking social media for availability.

Further afield, if you don’t mind a short drive, our favourites include Bertram’s in Warkworth, The Old Boathouse, Jasper’s and The Fish Shack in Amble, The Cook & Barker in Newton on the Moor, The Pack Horse at Ellingham and the Jolly Fisherman in Craster.

Room rates, minimum stays & promotions

We don’t vary our per night rates between high and low seasons or between days or the week as it’s something we know can be frustrating and we want our pricing to be clear and easy to understand. We do however offer promotions in the low season such as our brilliant Night on the House offer and in summer, we’ll typically offer additional discounts based on the length of stay.  From 2020 we are limiting stays to a 2 night minimum – if the website is showing availability for a single night yet will not allow you to book, please give us a call as it may be possible to book just the 1 night.

For more information on any active promotions please visit the offers section of the website here.

Finding us

Alnmouth is easy to find, just a few miles from Alnwick off the A1 – take the exit for Alnwick and then follow signs for Ashington and Alnmouth (A1068).

Cross over the bridge at the entrance to the village and turn right at the war memorial.  Turn left up The Wynd and follow the road along the golf course and you’ll approach the village from the bottom of Northumberland Street.  Continue up the main street away from the sea – you’ll pass the Red Lion Inn on your left and the church on your right, St Valery is located on the left hand side, just after the Whittling House (formerly the Saddle Grill) but before The Sun Inn which is painted bright yellow so hard to miss!
